Self Diagnosis

Odette England, III, 23,9 x 18 cm, Archival Digital C-Print, ed. 1/5+2, 2011

England is particularly interested in the complexities of recording 'invisible stuff' and in withholding, concealing, even obliterating details in her work. Through this penchant for obscurity, she aims to stimulate appreciation of those things which she considers among the most precious in life: longing, reminiscence, transience, impermanence and uncertainty.
Her latest series Self Diagnosis is a part-photographic, part-psychological study of how England sees herself versus how others see her. She uses her camera as a tool for self-analysis.She exposes personal family snapshots on the back of each of the ten official inkblots from the Rorschach inkblot test, to create a possibility space for evaluating who she is based on carefully selected childhood events. In doing so she scrutinizes the transitions and experiences that contribute to her identity.
England is represented in the US (east coast) by KLOMPCHING GALLERY and is based in Providence, Rhode Island, where she works and studies at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
