Juscelino Kubitschek was the 24th president of Brasilia between 1956 and 1961. He was born in Diamantina, Minas Gerais, on September 12, 1902 and died in a car crash on August 22, 1976. He launched an immense public works program, borrowing heavily to construct buildings, highways, hydroelectric projects, and the new capital city, Brasília. The monument is a tall pole topped by a statue of Kubitschek inside a crescent moon. It was designed by Oscar Niemeyer, Athos Bulcao, Marianne Peretti and Honorio Pecanha.
