Berkeley was an Anglican theologian, sensualist and philosopher. He represented a nominalist philosophy. Even more radical then Locke he had the opinion that neither the substance "matter" nor the substance "spirit" is philosophically justifiable. Things that surround people only arise through the fact that people perceives them. They only exist for being perceived. Despite his theory, he was a life-long believer.
