Descartes was a French philosopher, mathematician and scientist and is seen as the founder of modern early rationalism. Baruch de Spinoza and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz et al continued this philosophical flow in a critical-constructive way. "I think so I am" is probably the best-known dictum Descartes, which forms the basis of his essays.
