New York City is a major center for art galleries, it counts the greatest concentration of galleries on the planet. Artists and collectors from around the world come for a visit in search for inspiration. The galleries are as varied and surprising as the city itself. There´s an estimated range from 500 to 1500 venues, displaying and selling everything from antiquities to the latest thing. One of these wonderful galleries which is going to be introduced is the Klompching Gallery which focuses on experimental photography by new and established artists.
Darren Ching and Debra Klomp Ching
The Klompching Gallery located in Dumbo, 89 Water Street, Brooklyn was established in September 2007 by Darren Ching and Debra Klomp Ching. Darren Ching succeeds with photography for over 20 years, he is an accomplished designer, consultant for photographers and served as a judge and curator for several photo competitions and exhibits. He is the formerly Creative Director for Photo District News (PDN) and has been Adjunct Faculty member at the School of Visual Arts (SVA), External Examiner for Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), and guest critic at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and Parsons School of Design. Debra Klomp Ching has been involved with photography since the 1980s. She is an experienced curator, portfolio reviewer, private consultant, lecturer, writer and judge for photography awards. She holds a BA (Hons) in Photographic Studies, and an MA in Critical History and Theory of Photography and is also a member of SVA.
Brooklyn is not only a visitor´s destination with its historical sights, like the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge, it´s also a wonderful place to work because of its lovely and cultural neighbourhood. On the cobblestone streets you’ll find diverse offerings, both in artwork and exhibition spaces, from young newcomers to curators who’ve been at it for decades.
About the Gallery
The Klompching Gallery is a member of the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD), exhibiting each year at the New York Photography Show. Since its inception, the gallery has earned a solid reputation, they started with one artist called Simon Roberts, now they got 30 extraordinary artists for example Tessa Bunney, Diane Meyer, Jim Naughten, Max de Esteban and Elaine Duigenan ( a blog article about her will follow) who make great contemporary fine art photography. Here, you can purchase unique artworks, images that have a story to tell, something beyond the view, photography driven by originality and the highest level of craftsmanship. Gallerists don't just sell images – they sell physical objects. They work with contracts and their intention is to find trustworthy and professional artists for long-term 50/50 relationships. In addition to its exhibitions schedule, the gallery provides detailed, bespoke acquisition services to collectors of contemporary photographs. Their clients are all over the world but also a lot live in Dumbo because of the amount of apartment buildings there. The gallerist´s task is to cooperate with both, the artists and the collectors/buyers. They need to offer a platform for exposure access to people who buy the work but also bring the artworks to the collectors and let them know it´s good artwork. Besides this they have to take care of contracts, editioning and pricing, keeping track of sales, deal with press and marketing, plan and perform exhibitions as well. On average they have 6 exhibitions a year divided into single and group exhibitions. Some exhibition reviews were published in The New Yorker, Art Review, Modern Painters, New York magazine and the Wall Street Journal. Each year the Klompching gallery presents the Fresh Annual Summer Exhibition in search of great new contemporary fine art photography, with a consistent vision and originality. Only 5 photographers will be selected and moreover get the chance to win the Rhonda Wilson Award.
In Addition to the exhibition there're a printed catalogue and an online showcase. Besides exclusive events and competitions the gallery organises photography workshops and seminars that convey how to work with galleries.
For the owners and operators Darren Ching and Debra Klomp Ching it´s important, in a time where the internet facilitates the access to hundreds of images to offer an environment where people can walk in, slow down, and spend time with each piece of artworks, and get a better sense of its texture. Their aim is to create a space that shows artwork in a way they are meant to be seen.
