"Photographic art in general: it is one of the jewels of this year's "art". One of this year's two special shows focuses on the expressionist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner under the title "The painter as photographer". Kirchner used photography as documentation as well as inspiration and in turn saw the photos of his works as an artistic statement to which he devoted much loving attention.
"The media are impressively intertwined here," explains Thorsten Sadowsky, Director of the Kirchner Museum Davos, using the example of the painting "The Horsewoman": Kirchner first photographed a young woman on a horse from various angles, then made countless sketches and finally painted the large-format picture. Two-dimensional, without depth and yet from all sides.
The Burkhard Arnold Gallery in Cologne, which has been a pioneer of photographic art for over a quarter of a century, is showcasing works by Thomas Kellner. Born in 1966, the artist takes analog photographs on film strips one after the other. Photos of famous buildings such as the Eiffel Tower are reassembled from countless 35mm negatives: they seem to dance or threaten to collapse. "Photographic art is still a niche for collectors in Europe," explains gallery owner Burkhard Arnold. This year, he has come to Karlsruhe with lower-priced works."
