The physician Michael Schupmann has assembled about 700 black-and-white photographs into an exquisite collection: starting with the members of the group "fotoform", who drew attention to themselves after the Second World War through unusual perspectives and darkroom experiments, through the reportage photography of a Barbara Klemm or a Will McBride, to the works of the digital pioneer Andreas Müller-Pohle. The collector's view as an amateur photographer and photography enthusiast since his student days in Tübingen in the 1970s was and remained a personal one; this is also evident from the fact that he sought personal contact with almost all the photographers in his collection; he was always interested in the stories behind the images.

Thus, since the beginning of his collecting activities at the end of the 1980s, Michael Schupmann has succeeded in bringing together photographs by many important German auteur photographers and all notable artistic movements in West Germany after 1945 (and essentially until 2000): "subjective," staged and concrete photography, works of visualism from the 1970s and 1980s, conceptual photography, as well as touching reportage photographs and sober documentary shots, are represented, as are important works of fashion and factual photography. The concentrated power of the Schupmann Collection is also based on the fact that it focuses on analog black-and-white photography. With a selection of around 200 fascinating individual images, the exhibition permits a foray through the history of black-and-white photography in West Germany after the Second World War. For all their diversity, the photographs have one thing in common: their high artistic quality; precisely because of this, they open up a new view of the world full of surprising perspectives and deep insights.
