Paris, Arc de Triomphe
The Arc de Triomphe was commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 to commemorate his victories. The design of the arch by Jean Chalgrin (1739–1811) is based on the Arch of Titus in Rome, but it is much higher, with a height of 50 metres. It is built in neoclassical architectural styles. The arch is adorned with many relief’s, most of them commemorating the emperor's battles and engraved with names of generals who commanded French troops during Napoleon's regime. The arch is located at the end of the Champs-Elysées, in the middle of the Place Charles de Gaulle Pedestrian access to the Arc de Triomphe is via an underpass to get to the observation platform.
