New York, Brooklyn Bridge
The Brooklyn Bridge is the oldest suspension bridge in the United States, stretches 1825m over the East River and when it first opened, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world and the first which consists of steel wire. The Bridge connects the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. It was opened in May 24th 1883. The Brooklyn bridge was designed by John Augustus Roebling (1806-1869), who had earlier designed and constructed several suspension bridges like the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge or Waco Suspension Bridge. Today it carries Motor vehicles (cars only), elevated trains (until 1944), streetcars (until 1950), pedestrians and bicycles.
