San Francisco, Alcatraz
Alcatraz Island or its pop-culture name, The Rock, is a small island located in the middle of San Francisco Bay in California, United States. It was established first because of the lighthouse, which is one of the oldest in USA after that as a military fortification and then as a military prison followed by a federal prison. Because of its natural isolation in the middle of a bay, surrounded by cold water and strong sea currents, it is almost secure from jailbreaks. Since 1962 the prison is closed and is open to tours. You can reach the island by ferry ride from pier 33, near Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco.
