Feng Bin: Hutongs in the Night
A shadow in the night, the flicker of a light behind a street corner, street lanterns and room lights sparsely light the street scenes. It is quiet in the few remaining hutongs at night. Feng Bin’s black/white documentations from the “old cities” of Beijing are so poetic and still. She goes about the houses and through the alleys with a large format camera and captures fantastic scenes in an unbelievable range of gray tones. She leaves us alone in the seemingly cozy but unwelcoming alleys. The hutongs will soon be a thing of the past and perhaps, it is the dust, the gray dust that we suspect is on the streets and the houses that seem to draw us into another age.
