Ieoh Ming Pei (I. M. Pei, born 1917)
Ieoh Ming Pei, geboren 1917 in Kanton, China. Er verließ China im Alter von siebzehn Jahren, um am MIT (Bachelor of Architecture 1940) und in Harvard Architektur zu studieren, wo er bei Walter Gropius studierte und 1946 sein Studium abschloss.
Pei arbeitete als Dozent und später als Assistenzprofessor in Harvard, bevor er 1948 zu Webb & Knapp Inc. in New York kam. Pei arbeitete bis 1960 als Leiter der Architekturabteilung von Webb and Knapp, Inc. Im Jahr 1955 gründete er die Partnerschaft I. M. Pei & Associates, die 1966 in I. M. Pei & Partners und 1989 in Pei Cobb Freed & Partners umgewandelt wurde.
Ieoh Ming Pei entwarf das National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, das East Building der National Gallery of Art in Washington und die John F. Kennedy Library in Boston. Zu seinen jüngeren Werken gehören das Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, der Grand Louvre in Paris, das Miho Museum in Shiga, Japan, das Schauhaus des Deutschen Historischen Museums in Berlin und das Musée d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean in Luxemburg. Zu den von Herrn Pei entworfenen Wolkenkratzern gehören der 72-stöckige Bank of China Tower in Hongkong und das Four Seasons Hotel in Midtown Manhattan. In seinem Heimatland China hat er zwei Projekte realisiert: das Fragrant Hill Hotel in Peking und das Suzhou Museum in Suzhou. Im Laufe seiner Karriere hat Herr Pai zahlreiche Preise und Ehrungen in der ganzen Welt erhalten.
