Gustave Eiffel (1832 - 1923)
Alexandre Gustave Eiffel was born in 1832. He was a French structural engineer and architect and a specialist of metallic structures. Eiffel is specially known for the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, the Basilica Minore de San Sebastian and the armature for the Statue of Liberty, New York, U.S.. Eiffel was educated at the Central School of Arts and Manufactures in Paris. After been employee in several engineer- offices, he freelanced in 1876 and built bridges in France, Spain, Austria, Rumania, Egypt, Peru and Bolivia. In 1885 he supported the Interior structure for the Statue of Liberty. After the competition of the Eiffel Tower, he was involved in the construction of the Panama Canal from 1900 to 1920. From this on, Eiffel made researches on the wind resistance of buildings and delved on a construction of a wind tunnel. He deceased in 1923.
