Chapultepec Castle is located on a hill in Mexico City. In 1785 the castle was built by the the lieutenant colonel and engineer Bambitelli Francisco. After he went to Havana, Manuel Agustín Mascaró was the leading architect. During the Mexican War of Independence form 1810 to 1821, the Chapultepec Castle was abandoned. During the Second Mexican Empire, when Emperor Maximilian of Mexico and Empress Carlota of Mexico (Charlotte of Belgium (Princess Marie Charlotte Amélie Augustine Victoire Clémentine Léopoldine of Belgium / 1840 – 1927) set up their residence in the castle, several architects were involved in the works and gave its modern look to the Chapultepec Castle. Among them Julius Hofmann, E. Climb, Carl Kaiser, Charles Schaffer, Eleuterio Mendez and Ramon Rodriguez Arangoity. From 1882 on, the Presidents who made the palace their official residence were Francisco I. Madero, Venustiano Carranza, Álvaro Obregón, Plutarco Elías Calles, Emilio Portes Gil, Pascual Ortiz Rubio and Abelardo Rodríguez. The castle's sumptuous interior now houses the National History Museum and several other museums, including the Modern Art Museum, the Tamayo Contemporary Art Museum.
