A Tribute to August Sander

A Tribute to August Sander

Facets of the city at Art Galerie

Siegen. The project Facets of the City by Thomas Kellner is a memorable homage to the memory of August Sander.

Sander set himself the goal of photographing a large number of people, dividing them into different categories and documenting their social class, origin and affiliation in 20th century society. It is therefore possible to find social classes and professions that rarely or no longer exist today.

Thomas Kellner takes up August Sander's project and, for his part, attempts to illustrate a depiction of today's society. In doing so, he draws on Sander's famous approach that man is an expression of his time.
In his current project Facets of the Metropolis, Kellner has set himself the goal of portraying one percent of Siegen's population, which corresponds to around 1,000 people, using statistics on gender, age, migration background and level of education.

To mark the 60th anniversary of August Sander's death, the exhibition presents a 60-part series of portraits from the project.

Kellner wants to show the authenticity in each of his portraits. However, the project unfolds its depth when the portraits, in the exhibition curated by Kellner himself, come together and thus offer the viewer an insight into the diversity of the big city, which only becomes visible when the portraits are compared with each other. This photo series can be seen as a visual cross-section.
