Sir Norman Robert Foster (geboren 1935)
Sir Norman Robert Foster wurde 1935 in Reddish, England, geboren. Er ist ein britischer Architekt, dessen Unternehmen Projekte in 150 Städten in über 50 Ländern der Welt hatte und hat.
Schon früh interessierte er sich für Architektur, insbesondere für die Werke von Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe und Le Corbusier.
Nach der Schule im Alter von 16 Jahren arbeitete er im Büro des Stadtkämmerers von Manchester und trat in den Nationaldienst der Royal Air Force ein. Im Jahr 1956 studierte Foster an der School of Architecture and City Planning der Universität Manchester. Er schloss sein Studium 1961 ab und erhielt kurz darauf ein Henry-Stipendium für die Yale School of Architecture, wo er seinen Master-Abschluss machte und seinen früheren Geschäftspartner Richard Rogers kennenlernte.
Foster gründete 1962 zusammen mit Rogers und ihren Freundinnen ein Architekturbüro als Team 4. Team 4 erwarb sich schnell einen Ruf für Hightech-Industriedesign. 1967 gründeten Foster und Wendy Cheeseman das Büro Foster Associates, das später zu Foster and Partners wurde.
Fosters frühere Entwürfe spiegelten eine anspruchsvolle, von Maschinen beeinflusste High-Tech-Vision wider. Seitdem hat sich sein Stil zu einer erhabeneren, scharfkantigen Modernität entwickelt.
Foster wurde 1990 zum Ritter geschlagen und 1997 in den Order of Merit aufgenommen.
